Farooq Leghari sees no difference between Zardari and Nawaz

Former president Farooq Ahmed Leghari has said he sees no difference between President Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif, as Nawaz attacked the Supreme Court and pushed constitutional amendments through parliament “within five minutes to become emperor”.

In an interview with a private TV channel, the former president described the Charter of Democracy as “an agreement to approve each other’s corruption”.

Leghari described Zardari as “an enemy of Pakistan”, and said, “I cannot accept a head of state who came into power under a deal to rollback the country’s nuclear programme.”

He said Zardari was “not only corrupt, but also involved in Murtaza Bhutto’s killing”. He said the available proof was “sufficient to hand out a severe punishment”.

Replying to a question, he said there were several reasons to remove Benazir Bhutto from office, as she was “involved in corruption and wanted to strangle the judiciary”.

Leghari also accused the slain leader of “destroying the economy”, and said her government was responsible for the transfer of money abroad and extra judicial killings in Karachi. He said that former chief justice Sajjad Ali Shah was Benazir’s “gift”. He said even DSPs and SHOs in Karachi were posted in line with orders from Prime Minister’s House at that time, as then Sindh chief minister Abdullah Shah was just “a tool”.

Confrontation: Leghari said the country would have defaulted in case Benazir’s government was not removed. He said the current government’s confrontation with the judiciary would push the country towards the “brink of destruction”.

Leghari said he was assured that Mian Sharif – Nawaz’s father – would “swear … I would remain president for the next five years”.

Replying to a question, he said Chaudhry Nisar had told him that Nawaz ordered handing over Aimal Kansi to the US.

Commenting on Leghari’s interview, PML-N Senator Pervaiz Rashid said Nawaz “brought down Leghari’s empire”. He said the former president must have received some money for handing over Aimal Kansi to the US.
